Born in Limington, Maine
Clarence became a Fire Department member December 2, 1889, a Callman with Steam Engine Co. 3, located in the west end of the City at 176 Brackett Street. He was assigned Badge #41. His occupation was brick mason and worked for Samuel W. Joy & Son.
On April 26, 1903, he responded to the Holyoke Wharf fire at about 5:30 PM, when the second alarm was struck. By this time, the fire had extended to another lumber company on Sturdivant Wharf and Engine 3 members was ordered to place a hose line there. A strong wind off the harbor fueled the fire and suddenly flashed over, trapping four of the firemen, including Hoseman Johnson. While escaping, they were badly burned and assisted off the pier by other firemen and hosed down with the cool hose line. The injured were carried to wagons and taken to the Maine Eye & Ear Infirmary hospital, at Bramhall Square.
On May 22nd, after suffering 27 days, Hoseman Johnson, age 47, died from injuries he received at the fire with Thomas Burnham on April 26th. He was survived by his mother, his wife Lizzie and a daughter.
Hoseman Johnson was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Lot V-244 at Main & Lawn, near tree, which is only several feet away from Hoseman Burnham.
